MUSIC

GATEWAY FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA. The 45th season of the Gateway Festival Orchestra celebrates Independence Day weekend at 7:30 p.m. July 6. The orchestra will feature works by Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Henry Mancini, John Williams and John Philip Sousa. James Richards, department chair of music at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, conducts the orchestra, and Jessica Platt, a professor at Webster University’s Music School, solos during Barber’s Violin Concerto. The concert is in Washington University’s Brookings Quadrangle, near the intersection of Brookings and Hoyt drives. For information call 741-5498.

DRAKE BELL AND JOSS STONE. Teen sensation Drake Bell performs at Live off the Levee at
1 p.m. July 4, followed by contemporary pop singer Joss Stone at 8 p.m. Bell is known for his role on the Nickelodeon show Drake and Josh. Stone debuted in 2003 with her multi-platinum album The Soul Sessions. Stone’s newest album, Introducing Joss Stone, was released in 2007. Live off the Levee takes place at Soldier’s Memorial this year. Bell performs on the Purina Main Stage and Stone on the Budweiser Main Stage. For information call 434-3434.

ANTHONY HAMILTON. R&B singer Anthony Hamilton performs at Live off the Levee at 8 p.m. July 5 at Soldier’s Memorial on the Budweiser Main Stage. Hamilton’s platinum-selling 2003 album Coming From Where I’m From produced two hits: Coming From Where I’m From and Charlene. For information call 434-3434.

‘MY FAIR LADY.’ The Muny in Forest Park presents My Fair Lady at 8:15 p.m. July 7 to 13. In My Fair Lady, Professor Henry Higgins takes a bet to teach flowergirl Eliza Doolittle how to act like a lady, and teaches himself a few things in the process. For tickets call 361-1900.

READINGS & LECTURES

BARBARA EHRENREICH. Best-selling author Barbara Ehrenreich discusses her book This Land is Their Land: Reports from a Divided Nation at 7 p.m. July 7 at the Ethical Society of St. Louis, 9001 Clayton Rd. In her book, Ehrenreich looks at the hardships faced by a majority of the population, including employment, finances and health care. Ehrenreich has also written Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America and The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream. For information call 367-6731. 

JOSEPH HARRISON. Award-winning poet Joseph Harrison discusses and signs his collection of poems Identity Theft at 7 p.m. July 8 at Left Bank Books, 399 N. Euclid Ave. Identity Theft focuses on finding one’s self through times of betrayal, hardship and the pressures of the contemporary age. For information call 367-6731.

DARIN STRAUSS. International best-selling author Darin Strauss leads a discussion and book signing of his third novel More Than It Hurts You at 7 p.m. July 7 at Left Bank Books, 399 N. Euclid Ave. More Than It Hurts You takes place on Long Island, where Josh Goldin lives the ideal life with his wife and child. When the baby is treated twice for unexplained symptoms, the pediatrician believes Josh’s wife suffers from Munchausen syndrome, causing her to injure the child in order to draw attention to herself. MISCELLANEOUS

WINE TASTING.  The Melting Pot, 6683 Delmar Blvd., hosts a merlot wine tasting at 6 p.m. July 8. A sommelier and a certified wine specialist will teach the class, which includes tasting, study materials and snacks. For information call 725-4141.
