Cell phone restrictions are just common sense
To the editor:
I completely agree that cell phones should be banned while driving (Dial and drive, June 25-July 1). Too many times I have seen drivers run red lights, turn corners and pull out in front of people while talking on their cell phones.
First, let me clarify, that I am not against cell phones — I own one myself — just that their use should be banned while people are driving. I have almost been hit while riding a bicycle by people on cell phones, and almost run over in a cross walk at a stop sign by someone talking on a cell phone.
I have a friend whose daughter was plowed into broadside while going through an intersection where she had the green light. The accident left the 18-year-old girl in a vegetative state. She had her life ahead of her and was due to start college in the fall on a scholarship she won to St. Louis University.
I’m sure there are many tragedies that could have been avoided if only that driver hadn’t been distracted by the cell phone. How many more people have to be maimed or killed before we use common sense and pass a law against using them while driving?
