Local Motion
* Watch out for clowns, mini-cars, marching bands and motorcycles from June 29 to July 2. The Shriners of North America will hold their 134th annual convention, also called the Imperial Council Session, in St. Louis this year. The events include competitions for the Shriner clowns, horse patrols, motorcycles and cars, oriental bands and chanters. Everyone is invited to watch the Shriners’ parade from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.,
July 1, beginning at 20th and Chestnut streets.
* The St. Louis Fire Department HQ at 1421 N. Jefferson Ave. recently had its collection of “fire marks” rededicated. What is a fire mark you may ask? It’s a metal plaque from the early days of firefighting to show which buildings were covered by insurance. Putting out a fire at one of these buildings sometimes earned fire companies a reward from the insurers. The Fire Department’s collection of 300 fire marks from around the world was spruced up by staff members of the Missouri Historical Society.
* The St. Louis Association of Real Estate Professionals is holding a homeownership expo
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 28. The event at SLU’s Busch Student Center will feature talks by real estate agents, loan consultants, title-insurance experts and foreclosure counselors. Call 877-220-0749 for information.
* A group of women committed to promoting Fontbonne University has recently come together to form the Fontbonne Community Connection. Staff, students and organizations at Fontbonne are invited to apply for grants from the FCC. The FCC members — all of whom are women dedicated to promoting the university’s goals and who donate monies to a restricted fund each year — will make the awards on a regular basis by a vote of the membership.
