'Hats off to Hattie' event to traverse metro area

On June 13, the Mercantile Library at UMSL will open its doors from 6 to 8 p.m. for a reception in Harriet Hosmer’s honor, complete with a viewing of Hosmer’s Beatrice Cenci and a one-woman play based on Hosmer’s career performed by Elizabeth Pickard. Pickard will also perform the play at the Missouri History Museum at 2 p.m. July 11 and 25.

On June 14, Washington University’s Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will host a Hosmer symposium moderated by Andrew Walker, curator of American Art at the St. Louis Art Museum, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The symposium, which will feature speakers from universities across the country, will be held in Steinberg Hall Auditorium at Washington University.

Celebrations will continue later in the day with an old-time party marking the 140th anniversary of the dedication of Hosmer’s statue of Thomas Hart Benton in Lafayette Park from 5 to 6 p.m., followed immediately by a gala fund raiser to support the statue’s restoration.

The reception and celebration of the Benton statue are free and open to the public, while the symposium and gala are ticketed events.

Additionally, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum is currently hosting an exhibit of Hosmer’s work from the Washington University and St. Louis Art Museum collections. The exhibit continues through July 21.
