Scruggs' history in Clayton should be noted
To the editor:
I want to make a request that the next time the Word writes an article about Centene’s plans in Clayton it mentions — along with the venerable Library Limited — Scruggs Vandervoort & Barney, which constructed the original building on the corner of Hanley and Forsyth as its first county location when Clayton was still a small town.
It was a grand store with a sweeping staircase visible from Forsyth. It opened with much fanfare and a party on the roof of the parking garage. I managed the yard-goods department when it first opened and enjoyed the customers as well as the camaraderie that the store had.
I am sure many people remember it and I hope to see its name mentioned in forthcoming articles.
