Mental Health Board is failing taxpayers

 To the editor:

A recent advertisement, sponsored by the St. Louis Mental Health Board, asks the question: “How’s your Mental Health?” It might be more relevant to ask, “What’s up with the Mental Health Board?”

At its monthly board meeting on May 15, only six of the 13 members of the board showed up. Without a quorum of seven members, business could not be conducted. On occasion, there isn’t a quorum at the beginning of the meetings. More board members have to straggle in before a quorum is reached. It is a rare occasion for all board members to show up.

The Mental Health Board is supported by city property taxes. Voters in the city also approved a tax hike for the board a few years ago to fund services for children in need, in addition to mental health services. This provides millions of dollars more to the MHB. But if board members don’t bother to show up for meetings, taxpayers cannot have much confidence in how the board spends many millions of tax dollars.

The members of the Mental Health Board were appointed by St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay. The mayor needs to do a better job of appointing people who are more interested in fulfilling the responsibilities of public office.
