THEATER
‘CABARET.’ The NonProphet Theater Company opens its production of Cabaret at 8 p.m. July 23 at the Kranzberg Arts Center, 501 N. Grand Blvd. The show begins in a nightclub in 1931 Berlin and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. ‘FOOTLOOSE.’ The Muny presents the musical Footloose at 8:15 p.m. Aug. 2 through 8 in Forest Park. It tells the story of a city boy who comes to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned. For tickets call 534-1111.

LYLE LOVETT. The Friends of The Sheldon present Lyle Lovett and his Large Band at 8 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Sheldon Concert Hall, 3648 Washington Blvd. Fusing elements of the blues, country, folk, gospel and jazz, the singer-songwriter is currently on tour supporting his most recent studio album, Natural Forces. MARDRA THOMAS. The Nu-Art Series presents Mardra Thomas as one episode of the Jazz Singers series at 3 p.m. July 24 at its metropolitan gallery, 2936 Locust St. Well known for her realistic portrayal of Billie Holiday, Thomas combines her theatrical and musical talents to perform “The Jazz Story” and “Women In Jazz” on a regular basis. ‘THE BEN FIXMAN STORY.’ Ben Fixman signs his autobiography, The Ben Fixman Story: From the Ghetto to the Gold, at 7 p.m. July 22 at St. Louis County Library Headquarters, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd. The book is about the author’s experiences of rising from suffocating poverty to become a powerful industrialist, philanthropist and founder of a large New York stock exchange company. EXHIBITION OF STRATEGIES OF CRITIQUE. An exhibition of strategies of critique in modern art and culture is presented at 11 a.m. Aug. 1 at Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University. CINEMASPOKE. Cinema St. Louis’ annual CinemaSpoke screenplay competition and workshop continues with a reading of Paul Brandon Polaski’s Mike and the Sinister at 7 p.m. July 27 at the Centene Center for Arts and Education, 3547 Olive St. In the script, a would-be serial killer and the woman who was supposed to be his first victim experience role reversals when bogeymen from both of their pasts resurface.
