Local Motion - Sept. 3-16, 2008

* Here at the Word we get some strange requests from folks seeking publicity. This one has to come somewhere near the top of that list. On Sept. 11 ToastedRav.com is putting together a mini-documentary about local hot dog joints. Those working on Tour de Frankfurter plan to eat at 24 hot dog stops in the area during the course of 24 hours. And if that doesn’t turn your stomach, how about this? They are starting at 6 a.m. The crew is seeking locals’ idea for restaurants and landmarks that should be included. “Guest eaters” are also welcome. E-mail your thoughts to Jen Danker jdanker@bicstl.com or visit toastedrav.com for info.

* The Cathedral Basilica School is having an alumni celebration Sept. 7 at the “new” Cathedral, 4431 Lindell Blvd. The 10 a.m. service will feature an award to be given to Audrey Behrendes, who is retiring from the school after teaching for 30 years, and a reception afterwards. The grade school opened in 1916 and school officials have invited alumni to the event. School principal Michel Wendell said any and all Cathedral School alumni are invited. For more information, call the school at 373-8251.

* Interfaith Partnership/Faith Beyond Walls — that’s two organizations that merged into one a while back — has appointed Beth Damsgaard-Rodriguez as its new executive director. She’s been with the organization for five years with a remit focused on service projects and community building.

Damsgaard-Rodriguez replaces Orvin Kimbrough as top dog at the CWE-based organization.

* The Reliant Church and St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church are hosting a community barbecue and playground opening at the corner of Pendleton and Olive on Sept. 6. There will be activities for kids from 3:30 p.m onward, a barbecue at 4:30 p.m. and a movie at 7:30 p.m. All neighbors are welcome to attend.

* Herbie’s — the restaurant that’s slated to open in the old Balabans space — has lined up Kevin Sthair, who has ties to the old place, as the new executive chef. Sthair started in the culinary business at Balabans Bistro 201 in Chesterfield. He then moved out west to study at the Scottsdale Culinary Institute in Arizona, before moving back to St. Louis and spending five years as a sous chef at Balabans CWE.
