The Gentrification Question

by MK Stallings
On a cold night, earlier this year, Citizen Artist St. Louis a group of civically engaged artists held a listening session to gather opinions on political topics. Part of the conversation centered on gentrification and how artists have been used to further development efforts only to be priced out of an area.

Mayor Of Arts & Culture

by MK Stallings
In a city of remarkable cultural institutions, such as the museums situated prominently in Forest Park, the museums on St. Louis Avenue do not draw their funding support from the same Zoo-Museum District well.

Soon, A Youth Poet Laureate For St. Louis

by MK Stallings
Why should St. Louis have a youth poet laureate? In a region that revels in its youth sports and prioritizes STEM over the arts, poetry hardly seems to attract any attention beyond this community of scribes.

Ever witness a teenager make an unfamiliar adult cry? I have. In 2011, I met with three teens wanting to workshop their poems. They weren't interested in perfecting traditional forms of poetry.

Cool As Multiplier

by MK Stallings
St. Louis-based visual artist Roland Burrow finished a 3' x 4' painting on March 3. By March 4, he sold that painting for $600, just $200 shy of his asking price. This resulted in a gallery, a curator, and the artist earning profits that would not have happened if not for the massive crowds that flood the redeveloped old business district on North 14th Street in Old North St. Louis.
