The Webster Groves School District has hired Matthew R. Irvin to be the principal of Webster Groves High School effective July 1.

Currently associate principal at Lafayette High School in the Rockwood School District, Irvin has also been a grade-level principal at Lindbergh High School. He has also taught social studies and physical education at Kirkwood High School and New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill., and social studies at Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School.

He holds a doctoral degree in educational administration from Lindenwood University, a master's in educational administration from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a bachelor's degree from Missouri State University.

Superintendent John Simpson said Irvin "has demonstrated the ability to lead others — peers, young people and adults. As a former high school instructional coach and building administrator, he has the reputation for being one who expects much from others in their work with students and expects more of himself, as well. Dr. Irvin's commitment to creating a just and equitable environment mirrors the strong commitment of our district."

Irvin replaces Webster Groves High School Principla Jon Clark, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Also on July 1, Dwight Kirksey will become an assistant principal at the high school. Kirksey served as an administrative intern and interim assistant principal over the past two years.
