Mercy Clinic Family Medicine recently welcomed Daniel Stahl, M.D., to the practice.

Family medicine has a long tradition, but things have changed over the years.

"The amount of information available to us as providers and to patients has increased so much," said Dr. Stahl. "Keeping up to date is a task for every day. Another powerful change is that we, as providers, are no longer the decision makers. Our patients are educated by us, and a goal or decision on treatment is a shared effort."

Stahl advises patients that the most important things they can do on a regular basis are: 1) eat good healthful foods with plenty of fruits and veggies; 2) stop and/or avoid smoking; 3) limit alcohol use; 4) get plenty of regular exercise; and 5) be surrounded by those who care for them and care for others.

Dr. Stahl derives the most professional satisfaction from teaching patients.

"After a visit when a patient says 'aha,' that is what makes my day," he said.

Patients enjoy being listened to, Stahl said, "however, they truly enjoy being heard. Providers see patients in a vulnerable state. A true healing relationship can be developed when patients are able to share because we can hear them."
