The World Chess Hall of Fame, 4652 Maryland Ave. in the Central West End, has set a Guinness World Record with the May 7 installation of the world's largest chess piece.
Standing 14-feet 6-inches tall, the "king," constructed by R.G. Ross Construction Co. Inc., is made of layered exterior-grade plywood with a tung oil finish. It weighs 2,280 pounds and took about a month to complete.
Carpenters Craig Miller, Bruce Bullard and Mike Rhyneer, along with laborer Steve LaPlant, worked on the chess piece, which will be a permanent fixture on the Hall of Fame's patio.
