Area Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrations

Activist, comedian and nutritionist Dick Gregory of St. Louis will serve as the keynote speaker for the 26th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. State Celebration Kick-off Program for Missouri.

The event is on Saturday, Jan. 7, in the main auditorium of Harris-Stowe State University, 3026 Laclede Ave.

Gregory's experiences have made him well versed on a variety of relevant topics impacting Americans today. He will speak to an audience expected to number more than 1,200 at this year's MLK celebration, themed "Strength, Sacrifice and Service: Empowering a New Generation."

The program begins at 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

University City Celebration

The School District of University City invites the public to its 26th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m.

The event begins with a short parade originating at Jackson Park Elementary School and traveling west on Balson toward Hanley, then back east to the University City High School auditorium at 7401 Balson Ave.

Redditt Hudson will be honored as the recipient of the 2012 MLK Spirit Award. Hudson began his first career as a law enforcement officer. He now serves as the program associate for the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri and is a strong advocate for racial justice issues.

The celebration will feature students and staff sharing writing, artwork and music on the theme of "Remembering the man, embracing his vision!" For more information, contact CarolAnn Cole at 290-4019 or email ccole@ucityschools.org.
