CWE Window Walk

The 2011 Central West End (CWE) Window Walk kicks off its official two-week store-front window competition Saturday, Dec. 3, 1 to 7 p.m.

Fun for the whole family includes a live ice sculptor demonstration, carolers, a trolley car and chestnuts roasting on an open fire.

The Window Walk encourages area residents and visitors to visit the CWE's boutique shops, fine dining and entertainment while showcasing the uniqueness of the historic CWE commercial business district. The Central West End North Community Improvement District is the organizer for the event.

The competition portion of the Window Walk, which runs from Dec. 3-17, is a contest among CWE storefront business owners, retailers, restaurants and entertainment venues showcasing windows decorated for the holidays.

Area residents and visitors are encouraged to cast their votes by completing paper ballots and placing them in ballot boxes at participating businesses or by scanning Quick Response (QR) codes using a smart phone. The QR codes are available on posters in store windows and on ballot boxes at participating merchants.

All voters are eligible to win a $50 gift certificate good at select CWE merchants. A total of 10, $50 gift certificates will be awarded to randomly selected Window Walk voters. Gift certificate recipients will be notified after the Dec. 17 finale.

Five "People's Choice" awards will be given to the public's favorite displays. A panel of celebrity judges, who are well-known local personalities, will select first, second and third-place winners.

Skinker DeBaliviere Wintermarkt

The Skinker DeBaliviere Community Council presents Wintermarkt, an outdoor crafts sale in the spirit of the holiday season, Saturday, Dec. 3, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Greg Freeman Park, Kingsbury and Des Peres.

The Wintermarkt is modeled after Christkindlsmarkt, a centuries old German tradition. At holiday time, artisans, bakers and craftsmen of the village would gather in the public square for a sale of their handiwork. This outdoor market tradition becomes a festival, with treats to enjoy at the sale and at home.

Come see a variety of handmade gifts, toys and decorations, plus baked goods, hot cider and roasted chestnuts. There will be live music, carriage rides, a blacksmith demonstration and more. For more information, call 862-5122, email wintermarkt@gmail.com, or visit www.skinker-debaliviere.com.
