$80 Million Redevelopment Moves Forward In University City

September 12, 2012
The University City Council on Sept. 10 held a public hearing for a zoning map amendment for a Washington University student housing development planned in the 6200 block of Delmar.

Art Ackerman, a representative of Washington University, told the council the development calls for five buildings to be built in phases and would include 240 to 265 apartments and house 550-600 students.

The development would also include a retail component of 22,000-square feet, along with an underground parking garage to accommodate 300 vehicles.

The proposed area includes parcels owned by Washington University at 6255 and 6363 Delmar Blvd., 6322 Enright Ave., 701 and 707 Eastgate Ave., and 700 Limit Ave.

Blueberry Hill owner Joe Edwards and two other residents spoke in favor of the development, with Edwards saying the construction would "bolster the business and stability" of the Loop.

Construction could begin as early as January, according to Ackerman.
