Food Trucks Allowed At Private Events In Clayton

September 12, 2012
Groups holding events in Clayton now have additional dining options.

The Clayton Board of Aldermen on Aug. 28 passed an ordinance expanding situations in which food trucks are permitted.

Previously, city code had generally prohibited food trucks, with some exceptions for events such as the St. Louis Art Fair or the Clayton Farmer's Market.

With the changes, food trucks can now be hired by residents or businesses wanting to have trucks at private events, block parties or neighborhood gatherings.

The ordinance establishes certain parameters. First, trucks and vendors can only serve private party guests. The event host pays the vendor and the vendor is not allowed to take payments from individual customers. Additionally, the vendor must receive a right-of-way permit from the city's director of public works. All equipment must be in compliance with health and safety codes.

In reading the staff report recommending the ordinance, Clayton City Manager Craig Owens cited an increasing level of popularity of food trucks throughout the region. He said they would operate in a manner much like a traditional caterer.
