Special Election Possible In 87th District Race

August 29, 2012
If there is to be a "re-do" primary election in the statehouse race between Rep. Stacey Newman and Rep. Susan Carlson, it will most likely take place on Sept. 24.

Newman won the Aug. 7 primary race in the 87th District for the Missouri House by just one vote. However, mistakes were made by poll workers in that race when they accidentally handed the wrong ballots to about 100 voters. They received ballots for the 83rd District race, rather than the 87th District.

The St. Louis County Circuit Court has ruled that the two Democrats should run against each other again in a new Sept. 24 election. Since no Republicans filed in the primary race for the district, the winner of the Sept. 24 contest will represent the 87th District in Jefferson City.

However, as the Word went to press, Newman had not decided whether she will appeal the court call for a new election. The newly-drawn 87th District takes in parts of University City, Clayton, Ladue, Richmond Heights and Brentwood.
