The St. Louis City Circuit Attorney's Office announced Friday, Aug. 24, that charges have been filed against two 18-year-old St. Louis men in the Aug. 18 Central West End homicide of Megan Boken.

Keith Esters was charged with murder in the first degree, two counts of armed criminal action and attempted robbery in the first degree. Johnathan Perkins was charged with murder in the second degree, two counts of armed criminal action and attempted robbery in the second degree.

"Bond set in this case is no bond," said Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce.

Joyce said the two suspects made a statement to police admitting their involvement in the crime. She said there is no evidence of either suspect having past state-level criminal history.

Investigators believe Esters and Perkins saw Boken heading toward her car with the intention of stealing her belongings, particularly her cell phone.

"Esters approached Ms. Boken while she was in her car and attempted to grab her possessions," said Joyce. "He shot her while he was fleeing the scene."

Esters then entered a vehicle, driven by Perkins, and the two left the area.

"Under Missouri law if you participate in the commission of a felony and someone dies in the course of that felony, that is felony murder in the second degree," said Joyce, explaining Perkins' second-degree murder charges.

Joyce said if convicted on the first-degree murder charge, Esters would face a punishment of either the death penalty or life in prison without parole. The second degree murder charge against Perkins carries a sentence of up to life in prison with a chance of parole. Armed criminal action charges also carry a sentence of up to life in prison.
